Chronic Pain: What's New and How You Can Improve Patient's Lives

Don Teater is a family physician who has practiced medicine for over 30 years.  He initially worked in a solo practice in Clyde, North Carolina with his wife, Martha, who is a behavioral therapist. Since 2004 he has focused on the intersection of pain, opioids, and addiction and he has been active nationally on all aspects of the opioid epidemic. 

​

He was the lead facilitator for the expert panel during the development of the CDC Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. From 2013-2016, Don was the Medical Advisor at the National Safety Council leading their effort to reduce opioid abuse and overdose.

Ruth M. Carrico PhD MSN APRN FNP-C FSHEA CIC is an Associate Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner with the University of Louisville School Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, and is the founding Associate Director of the School of Medicine Global Health Initiative. Dr. Carrico has received training specific for healthcare epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).

Illicit Substances

Melinda Joyce, Pharm.D., FAPhA, FACHE is the Executive Director of the Western Kentucky Heart and Lung Research Foundation, which is in conjunction with Med Center Health, a six hospital health-system located in south-central Kentucky. Dr. Joyce oversees the research activities of the medical staff, fellows, residents, and students of Med Center Health.

 

She is an adjunct faculty for Western Kentucky University and teaches pharmacology to graduate nursing students. She also serves as a preceptor for pharmacy, nursing, and healthcare administration students. Dr. Joyce is a nationally recognized speaker and gives many presentations to a variety of healthcare organizations.
